[REVIEW] GlamGlow YouthMud(tm) vs. Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Mud Mask

I am a huge fan of self-pampering for relaxation, and just because. My #1 self-pampering activity has to be wearing a mud mask.

  1. It feels like spa-at-home experience
  2. Your skin gets a good, clean, tightening/brightening feeling
  3. And there’s TONS to choose from!

Which brings me to my review. I have read all the raves about GlamGlow’s YouthMudTM ($69 for full size 1.7oz, Sephora) mud mask, so I decided to buy the sample version (0.5oz) for $22. Which, to me, $22 for a mask is a bit pricey (and HELLO $70!) but I thought, what the heck, might as well try it.

Conversely, Freeman Feeling Beautiful Masks are easy on the wallet, and just as easily one of my absolute favorites. I have the Avocado & Oatmeal Clay Mask as well as Dead Sea Minerals Anti-Stress Mask and love them BOTH. So when I saw that they had a Charcoal & Black Sugar Mud Mask I SO wanted to try it and review it, immediately.

I had seen on Pinterest that these items were dupes, and being that I love cheap dupes for expensive ones, I had to try them. Last night I put GlamGlow on one side of my face, and Freeman on the other.

[REVIEW] GlamGlow YouthMud(tm) vs. Freeman’s Charcoal & Black Sugar Mud Mask

Here are the results!

Factors GlamGlow Freeman’s
Price $70/1.7 oz., $22/0.5 oz. (Sephora.com) $4.29/6 oz. (freemanbeauty.com)
Texture Muddy, rough, has noticeable, shredded Green Tea Leaf Pieces, spreads roughly (does not glide well through the fingers) Muddy, small particles, smooth, cooling to the touch, spreads easily in your fingers on the face.
Scent Slightly sweet, reminiscent of wet leaves  Slightly sweet, not too strong, mud-like
Look Light gray with a tint of brown and forest green  Dark gray, almost black
How well did it hold up against claims? CLAIM: “This mud mask leaves skin noticeably radiant and glowing. It works with the body’s natural moisturizing collagen to provide gentle resurfacing exfoliation and helps to leave skin smoother, brighter, and softer. While providing tighter skin texture and tighter pores, it provides a more youthful appearance and absorbs impurities without removing natural oils.”

THOUGHTS: There was definitely gentle exfoliation on my skin. In fact, it was a tad unpleasant to apply it BECAUSE of the exfoliation. But if that’s what you’re looking for in a mask, then I would recommend this. My skin felt tight and smooth afterwards, and felt very clean and still feels great through to today.

CLAIM: “This velvety, jet-black mud mask works like magic to moisturize, remineralize, and make skin sensationally soft! Skin-loving minerals collected from the Dead Sea have a natural nourishing effect that boosts smoothness and overall skin health.”

THOUGHTS: Velvety is a good word because that is exactly how it felt on my skin. It started out smooth and black and dried tightly to a light gray. My skin felt cool and clean after washing off, and felt great the next day, too.

Final Thoughts Did I notice a difference in these two? Yes, but only in the application, color, and scent. The effects were both remarkably the same.

My opinion is that YES, these are dupes, and I would recommend going with Freeman and using your savings of $65.71 to buy yourself 15 masks.
